Coach PEI Mentorship Program

Coach PEI Mentorship Program
Goal
The goal will be to pair up experienced PEI coaches with 1-2 upcoming coaches to create a supportive and learning environment in PEI.   The program will increase the opportunities for coaches to work with those in other sports and help them reach their full coaching experience, and perhaps become educators and mentors themselves down the road.
What does success look like?
  • Mentor retention reaching 75% year over year.  This gives a pool of experienced trained mentors who understand the process, and are equally receiving something from their participation.
  • Mentee’s returning to the program to mentor, or ideally, becoming mentors within their own sport.
  • Mentee’s reporting back to Sport PEI, noting successful learnings to ensure a good return on the time investment to be part of the program.

They must be aware of the commitment they are making and be available to attend quarterly PD sessions that will take place over the year they are involved with the program. Mentees must have monthly contact with their Mentors; this contact includes emails, texts or phone calls.  They must also have bi-monthly face-to-face meetings.
Mentee selection
Mentees should meet the following;
  • Coach athletes at least 6 months of the year
  • Must be In-Training in some NCCP Training in sport specific or multi-sport.
  • Commit to participation in the full program
  • Have support of their Community Sport Organization either PSO or Club
Expectations of the Mentors
Mentors are expected to contact their Mentee(s) monthly by email, text or phone to check in with the coach. Bi-monthly face-to-face meeting are to take place.  The paperwork must be completed to confirm both the informal as well as the formal contacts.  Mentors may be asked to lead a Professional Development session for the Mentees through the year (in an area of expertise that they are comfortable with). Mentors must complete monthly reports and complete the summary report at the end of the program.
Mentor selection
Mentors will be chosen through an open application process similar to the Mentees.  Mentors will earn a stipend for the time they spend with their assigned Mentee coaches as well as mileage for meetings requiring more than 40 km of travel.
Mentors should meet the following;
  • Be an experienced coach in their sport (5+ years coaching)
  • Mentors should be Competition Introduction Certified.
  • Commit to participation in the full program
