Nik Cummins - Wrestling
Write a memory/story about this coach.
My greatest memory with my coach was when I was competing at a tournament in Ontario called Matmen Classic. I had 3 national medalists on my category along with two other very touch opponents, and then a few first year wrestlers. I remember when I looked at the sheet and seeing my name on the rat tail of a bracket, and then having the two national silver medalists for my second and third match, before I would have to meet a national champion. Clearly the sheet was bias and it made me very nervous. Nik seen the sheet and was clearly very nervous, and mad about the sheet. Rather than making a big deal he just said to me "Hannah clearly people who made this want to see you lose. That's okay. This is a better reason to go show Ontario that no matter who they put you against, or what place they rank you on a bout sheet you will win". After he said that to me I knew that's what was going to happen. I then went and won all matches, and won the tournament for the 3rd consecutive year. I know that because of Nik and his words, and support that is why I came out on top.
What lesson(s) has this coach instilled in you/athletes/or others?
He has taught us life lessons about being respectful, and better people off of the wrestling mat. He has two rules during his practice 1. Respect your opponents, and coaches and 2. Have fun. This translates over to our schooling where he always checks up on each athlete to make sure there doing the same in school. He has also taught us about nutrition for athletes, the importance of hard work in life, and how you should always give back to others who, have helped you, and the sport and its volunteers.
